Finding YOUR Healthy Weight

Hi guys!  I wanted to talk to you about individual weights and differences today since this topic has been on my mind recently.

We all know BMI charts, the numbers on the scale, and how much Kate Middleton weighs at all times.  And these numbers affect us, even if it's only subconsciously.  There's an old joke that a woman always knows her weight and a man always knows his height, and both lie about those numbers.  Ha. 
What has created this fixation with a low or high number for a person to be?

These numbers shouldn't mean anything to us.  A healthy body isn't defined by a number; it's defined by a feeling.  A healthy weight should be maintained if you are eating healthily and exercising regularly.  You shouldn't have to starve, or over exercise, or fast for two days (don't even get me STARTED on that diet) because your body is getting what it needs to function.  You should feel great.  You should have enough energy to make it through 9 hour work days and workouts.  You should be regular. 

And, of course, every one will have a different healthy weight, no matter what their height is.  And it fluctuates with age.  If a woman is 130 pounds at 5'4 when she's 20, fact is she'll probably be a little heavier when she's 40.  Metabolisms and bodies change.  Even when you're young, you can't expect to stay the same weight you were two years ago.  Bodies grow, develop, and mature- and that comes with more pounds, inches, and curves.  But those are okay because it's part of being human.

You wouldn't expect a puppy to stay the size of your palm.

You wouldn't expect a flower to stay a bud.

You wouldn't expect a butterfly to stay a caterpillar.

So why would you expect your body to defy nature by staying the same?

Last year, my healthy weight was different than it is this year.  I tried to gain weight because my Mom thought I was too skinny, but I couldn't do it, no matter how little I exercised or how much I ate.  Then, all of a sudden, I gained ten pounds and two or three inches and my seams began to beg for mercy.  I have easily maintained this weight for about 8 months, whether I was training for a 1/2 marathon or trying a Green Smoothie Challenge, because at this point it's my healthy, happy weight.  I don't know exactly how much I weigh and I don't need to. 

Okay.  You guys better love your bodies by now.

And by the way, HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY!  Who else celebrated with a green smoothie? :)


St Patty's Green Smoothie:
Vegan, Green
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 scoop soy chocolate protein powder
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp green tea matcha powder (because I don't think I drink enough already :)))
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cacao nibs
Directions: Add almond milk, then spinach, then banana, then powders and cinnamon.  Blend until smooth, then add cacao nibs and blend for about 5 seconds, so you'll get delicious bits of chocolate pieces in your smoothie.  Pour in a 16 ounce glass and serve.  Serves: 1.

I love green smoothies!  Beware- they go quickly and then you want another one.  Don't be afraid to make another one!

Last night Adria grilled and we had a Mexican Fiesta for dinner!

There was:
  • Grilled Tofu
  • Black Beans
  • Fish + Shrimp
  • Grilled Asparagus in Dill Sauce
  • Grilled Peppers
  • Spelt Tortillas
  • Homemade Guacamole
  • Onion
  • Salsa
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Jalapenos
  • Cilantro
  • Hotlanta Hot Sauce!

My plate: salad with beans, peppers, cukes, and salsa, plus a tortilla filled with tofu, salsa, cukes, jalapenos, and TONS OF GUAC.  Plus asparagus.


We watched Life of Pi on demand last night and it was AMAZING!!!!  The colors alone blew my mind.  It was such a journey and I loved it so much.  Worth the $5.99 in my opinion!
